PASSENGERS on a Tiger Airways flight to Coffs Harbour suffered a moment of panic but the crew were extremely calm.
That was the reaction after the Tiger Airways flight was struck by lightning during Friday's terrible weather.
What many airline passengers don't know is lightning strikes on aircraft are a common occurance.
In fact, it happens every day all around the world.
The panic among passengers subsided quickly though when the pilot and co-pilot calmly turned the plane around to return to Sydney airport.
A spokesperson for Tiger Airways said the "safety of passengers and crew was never at risk" during the incident.
Although closer to Coffs Harbour than Sydney when the incident occurred, the reason the aircraft returned to the state capital was due to technical support being based there for the aircraft assessment.
