Mighty Birkett catch not enough in slim Heat loss

AN INSPIRING effort in the field didn't translate into a victory for the WBBL Heat against the defending Rebel Women's Big Bash League Champions, the Sydney Thunder.

Haidee Birkett's catch and three run-outs pushed the Heat to keep the Thunder to 8-132 in their match at Blacktown today.

Despite the attainable target, the Heat weren't able to convert a promising start into a successful chase after openers Beth Mooney and Kirby Short put in a 62-run stand.

In the end, the Heat fell three runs short to 9-129.

A disastrous over saw the visitors lose three wickets with a run-out and two dismissals, leaving Brisbane's chase in tatters at 7-96.

Birkett finished with 2-25 after four overs while pace bowler Sammy Jo Johnson squeezed the Thunder hard to only allow 0-16 from her four overs.

Brisbane will need to bounce back again tomorrow in their return clash with the Thunder at Blacktown from 1pm Qld time in order to stay in touch with the top four.

The match also featured the WBBL debut of 15-year-old Murgon pace bowler Renee Irvine, who finished 1 not out with the bat after earlier not being used in the bowling attack.
