Three cars destroyed by fire in Ballina

POLICE are appealing for information after three cars were totally destroyed by fire in suspicious circumstances at a Ballina car yard overnight.

A police media spokesman said Ballina police responded to a triple-0 call at 3.15am reporting a car was on fire at a business in Southern Cross Drive.

"The witness heard a loud bang and then saw a car on fire," the spokesman said.

"When police arrived they found three cars were on fire inside the car yard, a VW Passat, a Renault Scenic and a BMW."

Police contacted the NSW Fire and Rescue Ballina Brigade who arrived at the scene at 3.27am to find the three cars engulfed in flames.

"Fire fighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the three cars and checked nearby buildings for any signs of fire," a Newcastle fire Communications spokesman said.

The blaze was extinguished by 4.30am and no other vehicles were damaged.

A police media spokesman said a neighboring business sustained damage to a concrete wall from the heat of the fire and.

The cause of the fire is being investigated and police are appealing for any witnesses to call Crime stoppers on 1800 333 000.
