Elliot has coffee down to a fine art

THE perfect coffee should be rich, smooth and a work of art, and Nambour's Husk and Honey barista, Elliot Gwynne, has perfected all three.

For the past four years, Mr Gwynne has honed his skills and crafted the knack of creating pleasing art atop his lattes.

His creativity was recognised when he tied for first place with The Good Bean Espresso Bar barista Naomi Marvel at a latte-art competition held at Mooloolaba's The Good Bean.

"I went for a fairly unconventional design," Mr Gwynne said.

"It was a combination of two traditional designs - the hanging heart and the rosetta.

"I combined the two and approached the competition with a hanging rosetta."

The secret's in the milk, and a lot of practice. Mr Gwynne said the perfect design was judged on three main factors: difficulty, symmetry, and contrast of the cream and crema.

"It's a combination of the perfect espresso and well-textured milk," he said. "But it all comes down to how much you have practised pouring."

Husk and Honey owner Tashi Collins said good latte art enhanced the drinker's experience.

"People get so excited about the patterns. They absolutely love it," she said.

"You can see it on their face when you take it to the table."
