Why burning your toast or fries could be a health hazard

JUST as people were getting over the fact that eating bacon increased the risk of cancer, another new study has added crispy potatoes, dark brown toast and coffee to the list of cancer causing foods.

Your morning coffee, vegemite on toast or roast dinner won't be the same after scientists from the UK based Food Standards Agency found that these foods contain acrylamide - a cancer causing toxin.

The report found that the cancer-causing chemical occurs in starch-rich ingredients when they are cooked at high temperatures.

The report stated: "Acrylamide is a chemical produced naturally as a result of cooking starch-rich food at high temperatures, such as when baking or frying. It is also likely to be produced by grilling and roasting food."

"Regularly eating food containing high levels of acrylamide can increase the risk of cancer."

The FSA's Chief Scientific Advisor Professor Guy Poppy recommended frying foods to only "a light golden colour" and that bread should only be toasted to "the lightest colour acceptable."
