There can only be one winner at World Karaoke showdown

PREPARE for ballads to be belted out at this year's Australian Karaoke World Championships.

The event is being hosted at the Coolangatta Tweed Heads Golf Club Showroom this Saturday night.

Australian managing director Bill Masters said it was much more than a karaoke competition.

"We're in our 11th year," he said.

"It primarily gives the opportunity for Australian people who like to sing to be heard on a world stage."

Mr Masters claimed he and event planner John Preston introduced the world of karaoke to Australia in 1988 and since then it's blossomed.

"Before that there was no karaoke," he said.

"We're probably one of the leading countries behind Japan and the Philippines."

Mr Masters said gone are the days where you had to sink three of four schooners to bust out a tune on a karaoke machine.

"Now there are amazing singers getting up and showing their talents," he said.

Gold Coast karaoke star Candice Skjonnemand took out the 2012 Australian titles but lost out at the world championships in Finland to Raquel Pando from Spain.

She will be back in action as a guest singer at Saturday's event.

"It will be exciting to relive the songs and costumes," she said.

The Queensland finals start at 2pm and finish at 6pm.

The national title starts at 8pm until late.

Mr Masters said it was well worth attending both shows.

"It's a great night and everyone who comes will be able to see a conveyer belt of the best singers and glitz and glamour," he said.

The winner of Saturday's event will be taken to Finland next month to compete against the other karaoke champions from around the globe.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the door of the Coolangatta Tweed Heads Golf Club Showroom.
