The personal tragedy behind road crash statistics

A SHORT film premiering in Ballina tonight will deliver a series of heart-wrenching personal stories about the impact of road tragedies in our region.

The documentary was funded through the efforts of seven local Rotary clubs on behalf of Southern Cross LADS, the local organisation working to build a dedicated driver education centre for the Northern Rivers.

Bill Keenan, president of the Ballina-on-Richmond Rotary club which led the project, hailed the 20-minute film as a "fantastic, emotionally charged production".

"I think people when they view it, it will really make then sit up and take notice," Mr Keenan said.

"Each part of it draws you in. Every part of it is putting a point forward."

Paul Rippon, the chairman of Southern Cross LADS, said the film would demonstrate the importance of the driver education centre.

"We are hoping this video will help raise awareness of the need for this facility, and generate support for fund raising and in-kind contributions from the local community," Mr Rippon said.

Southern Cross LADS needs a total of $800,000 to complete Stage 1 of the facility to service Coffs Harbour to the Queensland border and west to Tenterfield, and has already raised $450,000 of the total. It needs just $350,000 to complete the track.
