THE Heart Speaks in Whispers is Corinne Bailey Rae's latest album.

Released last May, it debuted No. 2 on Billboard's R&B chart.

The singer, whose hits include Like a Star and Put Your Records On, released The Heart Speaks in Whispers after a five year gap from The Love EP (2011), her previous release.

Incredibly, her Bluesfest 2017 appearances were Corinne Bailey Rae's first ever Australian shows.

Still trying to get over the jet lag, Bailey Rae acknowledged that her album is about listening to her inner voice.

"Our inner voice sometimes can be very quiet, and can be drown up by the chaos around us, but I feel like I have learnt so much about myself in the last few years, to listen to my body, to pay attention to my dreams, to my subconscious, and to listen to my emotions," she said.

"I think our instincts and intuition are very important and it's something that we should really listen to all the time.

"The record is about that: how to respond to nature, intuition and your body."

The musician acknowledges that the intent of the release did change after it was finished.

"Initially I felt that the songs with fragments, images or pictures about transformation and renewal, which at the time I felt it was to let people know transformation is possible, but now I look back and I realise the record helped me realise all that movement happening in my life and my body.

"I went inwards to write this record, but I also wanted the record to be bold, brighter and multicoloured. This is the album that I have been the most involved in the production," she said.

Bailey Rae is also riding the success of having her cover of Coldplay's song The Scientist featured as part of the soundtrack of the film Fifty Shades Darker (2016).

"I was invited by the studio to watch the first scene of the film, a sad moment when (main character Anastasia) breaks up with her boyfriend, and I found out that the writer of the Fifty Shades series. E. L. James, is a fan of mine, so she was listening to my first album when she was writing those books, which I had no idea.

"She listened to Coldplay's original version of The Scientist while writing that second novel, so she thought it was a perfect fit that I would be singing the song.

"I met her in New York and she was super cool," she said.

Bailey Rae is very happy with the way her version of the song and the movie have been received by the public.

"I went to the premiere and it was very nice to see how the song worked among the dialogue; I loved working in that picture"
