Teenage ballerina returns in Giselle

SOPHIE Zoricic gracefully tip-toes across the Events Centre stage, but even as a seven-year-old she exuded the poise of a ballerina.

A decade later, the 18-year-old returns with the Queensland Ballet's production of Giselle.

Sophie started dancing when she was just three years old and asked to take ballet lessons.

"I did a lot of tap, jazz, contemporary, the whole lot," she said.

"I love the other styles as well, but ballet stood out to me.

"It was the challenge to keep perfecting and really draw to the emotion."

Sophie, a foundation student at En Pointe Dance School in Caloundra, graduated from the Australian Ballet School in December and was offered a contract with the Queensland Ballet Company.

"I was touring with the Australian Ballet School and Li Cunxin (made famous in Mao's Last dancer) came out to our performance and watched our classes," she said.

"He immediately liked me and we kept in contact."

This weekend, Sophie will perform in the Queensland Ballet's Giselle, the company's first regional tour under the tenure of new artistic director Li Cunxin.

"We are committed to sharing our love of dance across Queensland, and I'm very excited to share Giselle with Caloundra's audiences," he said.

He said it was a "masterpiece" of romantic ballet.

The performance will be on Saturday at 7.30pm at The Events Centre, Caloundra.
