Toddler-killer Warren Ross wants to get out of jail early

THE man found guilty of murdering toddler Tanilla Deaves on the Central Coast in 2011 has lodged an intention with the Supreme Court to appeal his conviction and sentence.

On May 31, Warren Ross was sentenced to 40 years in jail with a non-parole period of 30 years for the murder of his two-year-old step-daughter.

His partner, Tanilla's mother Donna Deaves, was jailed for 12 years for manslaughter, with a non-parole period of nine years, last September.

The reduced sentence was imposed in exchange for giving evidence against Ross, who pleaded not guilty to murder when the trial began in October.

A NSW Supreme Court spokeswoman confirmed Ross had lodged an intention to appeal with the court.

"Warren Ross lodged a Notice of Intention to Appeal his conviction and sentence on June 16," she said.

"He has six months from that date to lodge grounds. Once the grounds of appeal have been received by the court, the matter will be listed."

Ross was accused of beating Tanilla, leaving her with serious head injuries. Tanilla was left in a pram for two days before medical treatment was sought for her.

When the tragic circumstances unfolded, Tanilla's father, Adrian Warrick, was living at Ballina with his partner Brooke Bowen.

Speaking after Ross's sentencing, Mr Warrick said he and Brooke found comfort in the fact that Ross and Deaves would be haunted every day by Tanilla's memory.
