Tamara’s on way to her foobs

POMONA mother Tamara Allcorn is strong.

Not only did she recently face her fear and get up close and personal with a 2m-plus python, but more importantly Tamara said goodbye to two of her most identifying features.

Tamara, who works as a sonographer at Cooloola Radiology, made the tough call to have a double mastectomy at just 27 years of age.

This was because she has the breast and ovarian cancer gene BRCA1, commonly known as the Angelina Jolie gene.

This meant Tamara had an 87% chance of developing breast cancer and a slightly lower chance of developing ovarian cancer.

She said the countdown began when her sister was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma.

While Tamara said she had been comfortable undergoing six-monthly MRIs and blood tests to keep an eye on her health, increasing lesions appearing within her breasts helped her decide it was time to be proactive.

And so began what Tamara has called The Journey of the Foobs - her soon-to-be "fake boobs".

On Tuesday, she took the second biggest step of her journey so far: she went into surgery to have both breasts removed.

Later, she will have silicon breast implants.

It was her second biggest step because the biggest of all was the decision to do it in the first place.

Uncomfortable but positive, Tamara yesterday gave an update on her situation, after sharing the news with a 6500-strong group of followers of her blog, The Journey of the Foobs.
