Taipans survive late fright against Hawks

BASKETBALL: The Cairns Taipans have held on for an 85-79 home win in their NBL clash with a fast-finishing Illawarra Hawks.

The hosts made all the early running, jumping to a seven-point lead at quarter-time, before consolidating in the second term.

After dominating the third, the Taipans took a 14-point lead into the final stanza, only to be given a major fright, with the Hawks storming home.

The visitors at one stage got back within two points, before the hosts pulled away in the dying minutes.

Cameron Gliddon led the way for Cairns, downing 18 points, while Nicholas Kay hit 20 for Illawarra.

Following the win, Taipans star and former Boomer Mark Worthington announced he would be retiring at the end of the season.
