Swim honours Francesca
STEPHANIE Lymburner had fond memories of learning to swim in Ballina's Shaws Bay with her sister, Francesca Bass.
And now Stephanie, with help from her swimming friends, has organised a fundraising swim for women at Ballina Memorial Pool in honour of her late sister, who succumbed to breast cancer in February last year aged 67.
Francesca's Big Swim In will be held on February 25 and will raise money for the Ballina Breast Cancer Support Group/Drop-in Centre and the Byron Bay Breast Cancer Support Group.
Francesca, whose maiden name was Mercer, went to Ballina Public School and Ballina High School in the 1950s and 1960s.
"She always loved swimming, particularly in the ocean," Stephanie said.
"It brought her a lot of peace and happiness, even in her darkest hours.
"The aim of the event is to remember and honour Francesca and all the beautiful women in our community who fight so valiantly with breast cancer."
At the fundraising event, there will timed relays for teams, Aqua Zumba, a silent auction of art pieces, a raffle and a bubble afternoon on the water slide for kids, as well as a sausage sizzle.
"We are aiming to garner enough support to make this 'swim in' an annual event that will be dedicated to different local women who have succumbed to the disease," Stephanie said.
The event will be held from 3pm to 5pm.
