Swell on its way as the big boys take to the water

FAR North Coast surfers were standouts as competition continued in the Skullcandy Oz Grom Open at Lennox Head over the weekend.

Ballina and Lennox Head surfers Zac Wightman, Luke Condon, Zak Condon, Jack O'Brien, Campbell Taylor, Hunter Weston and Gus Baker all made it past the opening rounds.

Suffolk Park surfer Kian Sharah had to do it the hard way, competing in the second-round repechage in the Under-16 boys.

There are another two days before the finals on Wednesday.

"We're getting through it and we've had some excellent surfing over the weekend," contest director Tony O'Brien said.

"We have a good spread across all divisions of locals still in it.

"Most of the divisions are at the midway point now and the quality has been exceptional.

"We have a bit of swell coming and we're looking at solid waves for the back end of the event."

The invitational Under-20 division started late yesterday with FNC surfers Soli Bailey and Mikey Wright in the mix.

The winner will get $3000 and a return trip to Singapore.

"We've really been looking forward to seeing the older guys like Soli and Mikey in the water," O'Brien said.

"The division is stacked and it's basically a pro junior field.

"They're all up there at the elite level and it's definitely an event that's still growing."
