Super Bowl comeback costs punter US$2.1 million

THE sports world was in disbelief following the New England Patriots' epic Super Bowl 51 comeback win. But one high-roller felt it more than anyone else.

The remarkable finish saw the Patriots beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in overtime - after they trailed 28-3 in the third quarter.

But even when Tom Brady led his side into the extra period, the first in Super Bowl history, an American gambler still had a chance at victory.

The punter used a phone app to place a $US1.1 million bet on the Falcons to win with a three-point handicap, meaning even if the Patriots won by a field goal, they would have simply received their money back.

But Brady's team drove down the field and scored a championship-winning touchdown, costing the better $US2.1 million in potential winnings.
