Sub-$50k price for twin Peugeot 308 GTis

EXPECTING a nice wad of Christmas money to spend on a new toy next year?

If said amount is in the $50,000 region (who knows, you may have more generous family members than me), Peugeot's brace of 308 GTi offerings is sure to bring some festive cheer.

Pricing has just been announced for the Frenchie hot hatch - big brother to the already here and much-loved Peugeot 208 GTi - and both come in under the magic $50k.

Expectations were that the 184kW 308 GTi 250 and 200kW 308 GTi 270 were going to set buyers back a good deal more, but the rapid Pugs can now undercut the likes of French rival Renault Megane RS275 Cup Premium ($52,990), VW Golf R ($52,740) and incoming Ford Focus RS ($50,990).

The two Peugeot Sport-fettled 308 GTi variants - returning after an absence of ten years - are priced at $44,990 for the 250 and $49,990 for the 270, before those pesky on-roads of course.

And if you feel like treating yourself (or a loved one) before Christmas, the models are available to pre-order from next month ready for their February 2016 Australian launch.

National marketing manager for Peugeot Australia Dimitri Andreatidis said the 308 GTi brings an iconic badge back to a legendary segment.

"The 308 GTi signals more than the relaunch of Peugeot performance product and it signifies the growing importance of Australia for Peugeot, with the vehicle available to limited countries world wide."

So what do you get for your dollars? Peugeot Sport's 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine helps the hot hatch crack 100kmh in six-seconds (6.2-seconds in the 184kW 250), while both models develop peak torque of 330Nm from just 1900rpm.

And as Peugeot still understands the true meaning of an involving drive, only a six-speed manual transmission is available. Don't fret Aussie auto lovers, they're only saving you from yourselves: it's a French hot hatch and you need a third pedal, it's the rules.

Buyers receive mighty 380mm ventilated brake discs clamped by four-piston callipers, a specially tuned suspension system and a Torsen limited slip differential in the 270 model, the range-topper also scoring 19-inch wheels shod in Michelin Super Sport rubber. The 250 gets 18-inch rims with Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres.

The lightweight (1205kg) 308 GTis also get plenty of red stitching and GTi graphics and badges, while the 270 models also score Peugeot Sport alcantara bucket seats. And for the real chic crowd, the optional "Coupe Franche" red and black paintwork (as seen in the pictures) is also available on the 270.
