MORE than six alleged predators are arrested and charged every month in WA by the police squad combating the sick scourge of online child exploitation.

Since the Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team was established in December 2014, 161 people have been arrested by either WA Police or Australian Federal Police and charged with a total of 1009 offences.

Police Minister and Deputy Premier Liza Harvey said the team's important work of protecting children went mostly unheard of by the public.

"The officers of the JACET have helped take dangerous criminals off our streets who sexually exploit children and I want to use this opportunity to applaud them on behalf of the WA community," she said.

JACET's impressive strike rate is aided by information sharing and tip-offs it receives from law enforcement bodies in the US, UK, Asia, Europe and New Zealand.

While JACET has not had to extradite anyone from interstate or overseas to WA to face allegations, charges have been laid against people in WA relating to international victims.

One of those cases involved Perth child psychiatrist Aaron Voon, who sprung to global notoriety last year after he was arrested at a Canada shopping mall accused of filming a boy in a public toilet.

JACET officers subsequently raided his home and business in Perth and charged Dr Voon on his return to Australia after he was granted bail in Canada. In December, Dr Voon pleaded guilty in Perth Magistrates Court to nine charges relating to filming boys and child pornography. He is yet to be sentenced.
