Man taken into custody after siege

UPDATE: Police have now revoked the state of emergency and a man has been taken into custody. 

EARLIER: POLICE have declared a state of emergency as a man who is believed to be armed takes shelter in a house on Hawkins St, Gordonvale, south of Cairns. 

The emergency situation was declared about 1pm today and police are urging residents in the vicinity to remain indoors. 

The following streets have been shut down: Kern Street, Cairns Street, Clarke Street and Sheppard Street.
