Splendour in the Grass day two needs a wow moment

THE punters arrived by the thousands yesterday and Splendour is positively underway this year, but the first night, poised to be strong in music and entertainment, delivered only in quality but not in 'wow' factor.

OK, let's be fair, acts like Kelis and Outkast are high-quality performers, but neither of them has had a Top 40 single for a while.

Kelis showed a fantastic voice and looked stunning in a long pink dress, but even her interpretation of her hit Milkshake lacked of the 'wow' factor every music Festival needs.

Outkast filled up the Amphitheatre but once hit songs like Ms Jackson and Hey Ya! were out of the way, heavy hip hop tunes from their first albums alienated the younger audience members and, although great in quality, it felt a bit flat from a large section of the audience's reaction which can be described as 'polite but distant.'

The Presets did a great job filing in for London Grammar, but the lack of recent hits was also an issue for them.

Angus and Julia Stone had a good gig but, as most people were at the Amphitheatre listening to Outkast, their performance was more of an intimate show than a festival headlining act.

It was probably a good thing as they seemed to enjoy themselves.

Spiderbait was, by far, the strongest act of the evening. Their performance was energetic and compromised and having Dan Sultan as a guest guitar player was a very nice touch.

The only group that moved people to dance and enjoy the moment was Yacht Club DJs. The kings of mashup tapes offered two round sets of great visuals, lighting and music, before and after Kelis' performance.

Let's hope that City and Colour, Vance Joy and Rufus can give the 'wow' factor to today's Splendour in the Grass line-up.

Gum boots are also expected to be out in force today with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting isolated showers and thunderstorms this morning.
