Spanish star’s champing at the bit
SPANISH superstar David Villa has declared himself fit and ready for the new season after training with Melbourne City for the first time.
The 10th A-League campaign will be officially launched today and Villa, Spain's all-time record goal scorer with 59 goals, said: "I have been looking forward to coming to Melbourne and I am glad to finally be here and be playing football.
"It is only a short time before the season begins but we are professional footballers and are prepared for this."
Villa is set to play up to 10 games for Melbourne during a loan spell from New York City, where he has signed a three-year deal.
The 32-year-old arrived in Australia on Sunday along with his manager and trainer Claudio Reyna, who is also New York City's director of football operations.
Villa was given a warm welcome by his new teammates at City's training base at La Trobe University.
Coach John van't Schip was also pleased to see the striker, adding: "David will be an important player for us this season and our priority was to get him training with the group as quickly as possible."
Melbourne City will kick off the new season on Saturday night against Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium.
