Siege involving son of former top cop ends in man's arrest

UPDATE 9.46am: An emergent situation declared by police under the Public Safety Preservation Act in Parkwood yesterday has been revoked.

Just after 9am, a man was taken into custody at the scene without incident.

EARLIER: A siege involving the son of former Queensland police commissioner Bob Atkinson was continuing on the Gold Coast on Saturday morning.

Police said an emergent situation had been declared under the Public Safety Preservation Act yesterday in Parkwood.

The declaration was made just after 5pm on Friday after officers earlier attended a Greenacre Drive residence with reports of a man making threats.

Police are continuing to negotiate with the man.

Greenacre Drive is currently closed and residents in the nearby vicinity are being asked to stay indoors while police respond to the situation.

The Gold Coast Bulletin reported Paul Atkinson, who has a history of mental illness, barricaded himself in his home and threatened to harm himself with a knife at 12.30pm.

Dog squads, Special Emergency Response Team, a negotiator, and a remote-controlled robot were all called in to bring the stand- off to a conclusion.

Mr Atkinson was involved in a knife siege in April 2010, with crews called to his home after he barricaded himself inside with a large knife for three hours.

Anyone struggling to cope with mental health issues should call Lifeline on 13 11 14.
