Solomon Islands struck by 7.9 magnitude earthquake

UPDATE: THE magnitude of an earthquake that struck the Solomon Islands has again changed, now being downgraded to 7.9.

The latest threat warning from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre forecast hazardous tsunami waves of up to one metre for some coastlines on neighbouring islands.

UPDATE:  THE strength of an earthquake that struck the Solomon Islands on Sunday has been upgraded to 8.4.

Heavy damage to buildings and infrastructure is likely in an earthquake of that strength.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a warning that hazardous tsunami waves were possible in the next three hours along the coastlines of both the Solomon Islands and nearby countries.

This included Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Pohnpei and Kosrae.

EARLIER: A MAGNITUDE 8.0 earthquake struck the Solomon Islands on Sunday, with fears it could cause hazardous tsunami waves in several countries.

A warning issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said widespread hazardous tsunami waves were possible.

The islands, east of Papua New Guinea, were struck by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in December.
