Solar system saves council thousands
THIS year marks the completion of payback for Byron Shire Council's solar system at Brunswick Heads.
In 2010 the council installed a 5kW solar PV system at the Brunswick Valley Community Centre located on South Beach Rd.
Seed funding of $23,000 for the system was provided by the council's Revolving Energy Fund.
With the completion of payback for the initial capital for the system, part of the energy savings will now return to the fund to help it grow and enable other community and council projects to be implemented.
The council's sustainability officer, Sandi Middleton said the Revolving Energy Fund model allowed the savings generated by energy-reducing technologies such as solar power, solar hot water systems, insulation and efficient lighting to be re-invested in other energy-saving projects.
"Over at the Brunswick Valley Community Centre the 5kW solar system continues to provide up to 25 percent of the centre's current energy use, saving the centre approximately $4800 a year," Ms Middleton said.
"Plus it eliminates 7.25 tonnes of greenhouse gas annually. This equates to removing 10 cars from the road permanently or planting 430 trees every year. What we save in one project will be used to fund the next energy saving project."
