Shadow tipped to grab spotlight

HORSE RACING: Trainer Gary Moore has a host of strong chances at Hawkesbury on Thursday but labelled first starter Hostwin Shadow the pick of them and referred to Tim Clark's love of the horse to prove it.

Moore could leave Hawkesbury with a double or treble as Risen and Hostwin Meraki look well placed in their respective races. But it's debutant Hostwin Shadow that Moore is particularly excited about as the two-year-old grey gelding prepares to kick off his career in the Maiden Plate (1100m).

"Tim Clark loves him,” Moore said. "He is always asking about this horse and he has always had a lot of time for this horse. (Clark) only asks about two horses, Takedown and him, and he has always liked how he has acquitted himself in his trials.”

Hostwin Shadow, to be ridden by Clark on Thursday, finished second to Calculated in his latest 900m trial at Rosehill. Calculated won the opening race at Canterbury on Wednesday.

"He looks well and he trialled extremely well at his last trial behind the horse that raced at Canterbury,” Moore said. "He has ability this two-year-old.”

Meanwhile, Moore was also bullish about the chances of both Hostwin Meraki and Risen.

Risen comes into the Class 2 Handicap (1000m) following a luckless second at the Gold Coast in Class 1 company last start.

"He should have won last start,” Moore said.

"He drew poorly and he missed the start (and he was caught wide throughout). He is very well placed off this mark and I do have time for this horse. He has good gate speed and it has been 40 days since his last run but he has been freshened up.”

Hostwin Meraki was very impressive when scoring on debut at Newcastle last month and Moore is upbeat he can make it two from two in the Class 1 Handicap (1300m).

"He has improved since Newcastle,” Moore said. "He looks well placed and I think he will be very hard to beat. I don't think (barrier nine) will be an issue because he has good gate speed and can take up a position.

"I like the way he found under pressure at Newcastle and he might not have beat much but when (Josh Parr) gave him a crack with the whip he picked up again.”

Moore's other runner at Hawkesbury will be debutant Lucky Machu in Race 1.

"He hasn't trialled too bad but he will still probably need this outing,” Moore said. "He looks well but he might just need the run against the two-year-olds that have already raced.”

Meanwhile, Moore's stable star Takedown is eyeing off a return to racing in The Shorts (1100m) at Randwick on September 14.

"He is in great form and he will start pacework next week,” Moore said. "He looks great.”

Returns following a bleeding attack last prep and his three trials have been super. His fresh run last prep was outstanding. They will go quick here and he will get the last crack at them.

Wasn't suited by the sprint home last start where the first three around the bend were the first three home. She actually clocked the quickest last 600m of the race and that was her first run for five weeks. She can settle closer up in trip.

QUADDIE (R5-8): 1st leg: 2,5,8,9,11,12. 2nd leg: 1,9. 3rd leg: 3,6,8. 4th leg: 3,4,6,9.

Gerald Ryan has seven runners engaged at Hawkesbury and pretty much all of them have genuine each-way chances.
