Seniors are 'highest risk' of substance abuse

AUSTRALIAN seniors lamenting the younger generation's wild ways with alcohol and drugs may need a good, long hard look in the mirror.

Because according to new research, the baby boomer generation is hitting the bottle and dabbling in recreational drugs like never before!

Researchers from the South London Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and Flinders University in Adelaide have found that seniors are bucking the national trend and are consuming alcohol and drugs at alarming rates.

According to figures, binge drinking has declined in all age groups except for those aged over 40.

And Australians aged over 50 recorded the "largest percentage increase" of illicit drug use.

"People over 50 have higher rates than younger age groups for both past year and lifetime illicit drug misuse, notably cannabis," researchers wrote in the British Medical Journal.

Health experts alarmed by the research believe new education campaigns are needed to respond to the findings.

Their calls come as an ageing population continues to climb towards record numbers.

"Alcohol misuse in the older population may increase further as baby boomers get older because of their more liberal views towards, and higher use of, alcohol," researchers said.

The research also found the number of seniors needing treatment for substance abuse is expected to treble in the United States and double in the Europe by 2020.
