It's all in the numbers - SCU's got plenty to celebrate

AS SOUTHERN Cross University prepares to celebrate their 20th anniversary this weekend, they're also celebrating some fantastic statistics.

Figures show a high rate of students at SCU are the first in their family to attend university - midwife Alana McKelvey and psychology graduate Samantha Joplin know all about that because it fits them.

According to statistics released by the university, SCU has the highest proportion of commencing students who are first in their family to attend university at 68.6%, with the average proportion across the university sector much lower at 48.3%.

Samantha Joplin was the first in her family to attend university and graduated with honours from SCU this year.

SCU has an indigenous student participation rate of 2.94% compared to an average of 1.41% for unis.

SCU was ranked fifth Australia-wide for indigenous participation in 2012.

After having a baby at 16, Ms McKelvey had her hands quite full with motherhood, but a couple of years ago she began the Preparing for Success Program at SCU and then made her journey into studying midwifery at SCU.

Now that she's graduated, she works as a midwife at Lismore Base Hospital.

Ms Joplin graduated with a Bachelor of Psychology with first class honours in April.

Experiences with mental illness in some family and friends sparked her interest in psychology, Ms Joplin said.

She now wants to become a neuro-psychologist and is continuing her studies at Sydney University where she is undertaking a Doctor of Clinical Psychology combined with a Masters in Science double degree, and potentially a PhD.

SCU celebrates its 20th anniversary this weekend with some special celebrations.
