Science skips the egg but breeds
FOR the first time, scientists in the UK have shown they can conceive healthy mice by fusing sperm with skin cells or other cells instead of eggs.
This means that in the distant future it could be possible to breed animals using non-egg cells and sperm.
This could have applications in human fertility treatment, such as gay men having children with each other or assisting women with fertility issues to have babies by using other cells in their bodies. Such children would have DNA from both parents. It could also help with breeding endangered species.
