Schoolie sex attack at Byron

A 17-YEAR-OLD Melbourne girl was sexually assaulted on Byron Bay’s Main Beach late on Monday night.

Police arrested an 18-year-old man from country Victoria at a holiday house in Kingsley Street, Byron Bay, at 10.30am yesterday.

He was later charged with sexual assault, indecent assault and assault.

The girl, from Melbourne’s north-western outskirts, managed to break free and run away.

She reported the assault to police from the Tweed-Byron Local Area Command, who immediately began to investigate.

The man has been granted conditional bail to appear in Byron Bay Local Court on Friday, January 8.

The alleged assault comes despite the town’s best efforts to look after its young visitors during Schoolies Week.

Schoolies hub co-ordinator Nicqui Yazdi issued a reminder to schoolies that they should look out for their friends.

The hub is a safe zone set up at Apex Park next to Byron’s Main Beach for schoolies.

It is open 24 hours a day and is manned by volunteers.

On Monday, police had praised schoolies for their good behaviour.

Last Saturday night was expected to be the biggest night of schoolies, but passed largely without incident.
