Ryan says bye to The Bachelorette

NOOSA'S Ryan Palk discovered he's much more comfortable on the water than hamming it up for the cameras during his time on The Bachelorette.

The pro sailor said he realised he was a bit too shy for the reality dating show after being nominated by his Brisbane-based sister Bianca.

"Most of my life is on the water and I was a fish out of water in that situation," he told the Daily.

"I'd never seen the show before and I didn't do too much research really, so I didn't know what I was getting involved in.

"The more I got into it, the more I realised it was a very public way of going about your private life and I wasn't that comfortable with it."

The 28-year-old didn't get a single date with the show's star Georgia Love before his elimination tonight and is best known to most Bachelorette viewers as the guy who looks like Heath Ledger.

"I haven't really been looking at social media but I know there's been a Heath Ledger meme going around," he said.

"It doesn't really surprise me. That's been happening since I was in Year 8."

Palk had been training for this year's Rio Olympics when an ankle injury put an end to his laser sailing career.

He moved from his hometown of Noosa to Perth earlier this year to study a Masters in Business Leadership at Curtin University and pursue the new sport of kite foiling.

"It's like kite surfing except you're on a foil board and it lifts you out of the water," he said.

"The top guys get up to about 70kph and if you fall you really hurt yourself. I'm really interested in doing it competitively.

"I'm still very green, so I've got to get up to speed and see if I'm good enough to give it a red hot go."

Palk's still single, for the record.

"After the show I went home to the Coast for a bit and since I've been back here in Perth I've thrown myself into training and finishing uni," he said.

The Bachelorette continues on Wednesday at 7.30pm on Channel 10.
