Russia sends warships to Australia for G20
OFFICIALS with the Department of Defence are closely monitoring a group of Russian naval vessels currently travelling in international waters towards Australia.
A statement from Defence said "a number" of Russian vessels were being monitored in line with international laws.
It is understood the vessels were en route to Australia in support of Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit for the G20 this week.
Such vessels have previously been sent by Russia to similar international functions including the APEC summit in 2009 in Singapore.
The Kremlin has not yet released any statements on the matter, and it is unclear if Russia will seek permission for the vessels to enter Australian waters.
