Row brewing over valuable key farmland
CONCERNS have been raised that plans for a 500-lot subdivision at Skennars Head could also lead to the formation of two blocks of land with dwelling entitlements on the eastern side of The Coast Road, near Sharpes Beach.
Ballina Shire Council is writing a submission to the Joint Regional Planning Panel about the plans for development of the Stewart farm on the western side of the road.
If it goes ahead, the land owned by the Stewarts on the eastern side would have to be separated.
That could potentially create two blocks of land and they could have building entitlements, says the council's acting strategic services group manager, Matthew Wood.
Cr Keith Johnson said that was not a desirable situation.
"It would be a travesty," he said. "People would pay mega bucks for that land. but it would destroy what we are trying to achieve on the coastal strip."
Councillors are also concerned that small 450 sq m blocks are being proposed as part of the development of the Stewart land.
"People need to be able to live next to their neighbours without passing the toilet paper from one house to the next," Cr Paul Worth said.
