Rookie is ready to step up for Reds

BLAKE Enever is hoping to become a Super Rugby mainstay after being named in the Queensland Reds' squad to play Melbourne Rebels tomorrow night.

The 200cm, 112kg lock said he would be looking to impress in the trial match in the hope of becoming a regular member of the Reds line-up.

"I learned a lot last year and I am in a better place this year to put pressure on the top blokes and hopefully be a part of the top squad," he said.

"All I can do is my best and I intend doing that against the Rebels on Friday night.

"I'll keep putting my name up there for selection and hopefully I can get some game time in the Reds this year."

Enever made his Super Rugby debut in 2012, coming off the bench against the Rebels in round 16. While that was his only appearance for the season, he did enough to earn a place in the Reds' extended squad in 2013.

Last season he played a key role in Easts Tigers' run to the 2013 Premier Rugby Premiership and was consistently named as 23rd man for the Reds.

This season, however, Enever is determined to take the next step after a solid pre-season training alongside current Reds and Wallabies enforcers James Horwill and Rob Simmons

"It's a long pre-season which gave me the opportunity to spend a lot of time with Horwill and Simmons," the 23-year-old said.

"I've tried to pick their brains as much as I can because they are the best players in the country."

Enever said he was hopeful a consistent place in the Reds squad wasn't far off.

"I'm not sure when it will happen and can only keep training and doing what I can to be the best player," he said.

Meanwhile, the Reds' plans for next week's Super Rugby opener against the Brumbies next week have been dealt a blow with Aidan Toua struggling with a hamstring soreness following last week's trial win over the Chiefs in Toowoomba.

Toua, who could line up in the fullback spot for the Reds, was set for scans yesterday but could be a doubt for next week.
