Roar defensive stocks take another blow

FOOTBALL: New Brisbane signing Avraam Papadopoulos can't arrive soon enough, with the Roar's already battered defensive stocks taking another blow on Thursday when Corey Brown was ruled out for at least three weeks with a hamstring injury.

Melbourne-born Greek international Papadopoulos has signed with the Roar until the end of the season.

The club offered the 32-year-old centre-back an injury-replacement deal after the loss of utility defender Daniel Bowles for at least 10 months with ruptured knee ligaments.

Also on the Roar casualty list is rookie centre-back Kye Rowles (calf), and now left-back Brown, who is likely to have scans on the hamstring he tweaked at training this week.

Papadopoulos isn't expected to arrive in Brisbane from Greece until today and is therefore no chance of playing the Roar's A-League clash against the Glory in Perth.

Aloisi said the new signing would boost the team.

"I look at what he's like as a player, asked a lot of people what he's like as a person - great person - and that's what we want at the football club," Aloisi said.

"He's not only a good player, he's a good leader, so we're happy."

Aloisi has some crucial selection decisions to make for tonight's clash.

Rookie left back Connor O'Toole could make his A-League debut unless Aloisi opts to use his regular midfielder and skipper Matt McKay in the role vacated by Brown.

Teenager Dane Ingham might again be used at right back, although Aloisi does have the option of using defensive midfielder Jacob Pepper in the role.

Another option up Aloisi's sleeve is to break up the central defensive pairing of Jade North and Luke DeVere, use one of them at right-back, and play midfield rock Thomas Kristensen as a centre-back.

Goalkeeper Jamie Young won't play against Perth but is set to start on Tuesday night at home against Thai champions Muangthong United in the Asian Champions League as Aloisi continues to rotate Young and first-choice gloveman Michael Theo.
