RIO 2016: Veteran Aussie riders take centre stage

EQUESTRIAN: Mary Hanna has set an Olympic record for Australia, becoming the oldest competitor for the country in Games history.

Hanna, 61, recorded a personal-best Grand Prix score of 69.643% on her horse Boogie Woogie 6.

"He's been doing Grand Prix for less than a year so I couldn't be more thrilled with him," Hanna told the Australian Olympics Committee website.

"He's come so far and I feel like every day he grows up and I know that really good 70s score is there, he proved that today.

"He's such a cool little dude in the arena, he never runs out of energy.

"There were obvious mistakes but he's only done five Grands Prix in his life. He's very young and I think one of the youngest dressage horses here."

Hanna was not the only veteran in Australia's dressage team, with 60-year-old Sue Hearn getting a score of 65.343% on her horse Remmington.

Competition continues Thursday when cousins Lyndal and Kristy Oatley will perform their Grand Prix tests for Australia. At the half-way point Australia was in 9th position.
