RIO 2016: Trans-Tasman tussle in hockey finals

HOCKEY: Mariah Williams' first Olympic goal for the Hockeyroos has helped the Australian women to a quarter-final with trans-Tasman rival New Zealand on Tuesday morning (7am AEST).

The Aussies finished third in Pool B with Emily Smith sealing the 2-0 win over Japan late in the fourth quarter of the final game of the pool stage.

New Zealand finished second in its pool after a 3-0 win over China.

Australian coach Adam Commens was pleased with the overall performance and was expecting a hard game against the Kiwis.

"It's going to be a tough match and one of the medal favourites will be going out in the quarter finals,” he said.

"We know New Zealand very well.

"We know how we need to play to get the result and we're confident if we execute our game plan that's what we will be able to do.”
