Ponting joins Aussies’ ODI campaign

NEW Australian coach Justin Langer has drafted in his former teammate and Test captain Ricky Ponting to help guide an inexperienced one-day squad against England.

Ponting will join coaching staff for the five-game series against the old enemy as preparations ramp up for next year's World Cup.

The list of absentees from the playing stocks goes beyond suspended duo Steve Smith and David Warner, with the fast bowling stocks boasting less than 30 one-day games between them.

Ponting, who played in three World Cup winning sides, helped guide the T20 team to a series win earlier this year and will work alongside Langer from June 10.

"Ricky is one of the greats of the game, and since he was already in England doing some commentary we saw it as a great opportunity to have him join our team for this important series," Langer said.

"We have played a lot of cricket together and coached alongside each other previously, and he will also know many of the players already through his work with the team over the past two summers and his BBL commitments.

"Ricky's knowledge of the game is second-to-none, and we know that his experiences, tactical expertise and leadership will be invaluable for this group, as we start to build a team capable of winning a World Cup in these conditions in a year's time."

Ponting's name was linked to the national T20 coaching job when Darren Lehmann resigned.

But Langer decided to take on the coaching role for all three forms of the game as the Australian sides look to rebuild their on-field reputation following the ball tampering scandal in South Africa.
