Rhoades labelled 'a dope' in NSW parliament

LOCAL Government NSW president and Coffs Harbour City Councillor Keith Rhoades has been labelled "a dope" in State Parliament.

Labor Member Ron Hoenig expressed a deep mistrust of councils as the Legislative Assembly debated proposed changes to the local government elections.

"The members opposite should not have faith in them either in respect of voluntary amalgamations," he said.

"It will not matter how much money the government is offering because councils back self-interest every time."

Mr Hoenig said moves to force businesses to vote in council elections would give right-leaning candidates an unfair advantage.

"In my view, many of the amendments proposed in the bill lack proper public policy rationale," he said.

"Some of them are a thinly veiled effort to make local government election results more favourable to conservative candidates."

When Liberal MP Gareth Ward suggested Mr Rhoades supported the changes, Mr Hoenig said: "He is a dope too".

"I acknowledge the interjection that the Member for Heffron believes that Keith Rhoades is a dope. I do not believe that," Mr Ward said.

"I think Keith Rhoades is doing a tremendous job in steering local government in the right direction."
