RFS firefighters given honours

THE Rural Fire Service has said thanks on behalf of the community to 59 long-serving firefighting volunteers.

On Saturday, NSW RFS Assistant Commissioner Bruce McDonald presented the volunteers from 37 Clarence Valley brigades with long-service medals, acknowledging their commitment to the service

"Every one of the volunteers here today is worthy of our most sincere thanks and I would like to personally commend them, not only for their commitment to the NSW RFS, but also the ongoing dedication to their community,"Assistant Commissioner McDonald said.

"The 59 volunteers receiving medals today have accumulated an incredible 1249 years of service between them.

"While these men and women certainly don't expect awards or accolades, this outstanding achievement warrants recognition, so it is only fit and proper they are acknowledged today."

He said Clarence Valley brigades responded to a range of bush, grass and house fires, as well as motor vehicle accidents and other emergencies.

He presented the volunteers with long-service medals and handed over the keys to a new fire truck.

"The NSW RFS is at the cutting edge of bushfire fighting due to significant improvements in technology, training, equipment and communications, however the real strength of the NSW RFS resides within its people," he said.

He congratulated Minnie Water volunteers on the newest addition to the brigade: their new fire truck.

"This new truck will be of great assistance in supporting firefighters in the Clarence Valley area and beyond. These new vehicles are replacing older-style models and will allow firefighters to continue providing a high level of emergency service to residents in the Minnie Water area."
