Injuries force Lions to fly in retired players

RETIRED Welsh winger Shane Williams will make a flying visit to Australia to help the injury-hit British and Irish Lions for 80 minutes.

Williams, who quit the international scene after scoring a try in the 24-18 loss to the Wallabies in Cardiff in December 2011, will arrive from Japan today, where is playing for the Mitsubishi Dynabours, to play against the Brumbies in Canberra tomorrow, before heading back to Sagamihara on Wednesday.

The 36-year-old, Wales' record try-scorer with 58 in 87 Tests, and former World Player of the Year, has toured twice with the Lions before - New Zealand (2005), and South Africa (2009) - and has played four Tests.

He will be joined in the Lions line-up - to be captained by Irish hooker Rory Best - by another three players called up by coach Warren Gatland after his injury list increased following the 47-17 win over the Waratahs in Sydney on Saturday night.

England centre Billy Twelvetrees, who arrived in Sydney on Friday, will make his Lions debut alongside compatriots, centre Brad Barritt, who quit his holiday in the US to join the tour, and winger Christian Wade, who was on England's tour of Argentina.

Wade received his call-up just hours before he was due to win his second England cap after his debut against the Pumas last week.

The 22-year-old scored 18 tries in 26 games for his club side Wasps last season and won a unique double at the Rugby Players' Association awards, winning both the players' player and the young player awards.

The Lions are unbeaten on tour, having won five successive games, with the Brumbies clash their final fixture before facing the Wallabies in Saturday's first Test in Brisbane.

Gatland currently has injury concerns over winger George North (hamstring), and centres Jamie Roberts (hamstring) and Manu Tuilagi (shoulder).

British and Irish Lions: Kearney, Wade, Barritt, Twelvetrees, Williams, Hogg, B.Youngs, Grant, Best (capt), Stevens, Evans, Gray, O'Brien, Tipuric, Faletau. Reserves: Hibbard, Corbisiero, Cole, Parling, Lydiate, Murray, Farrell, Zebo.
