Residents oppose Lennox land sale

A PROTEST against the proposed sale of two blocks of Ballina Shire Council-owned land at Lennox Head will be held this Sunday.

The blocks are located on Ross St, across from the Lennox Surf Club and next to the caravan park.

Council at its last meeting rejected a rescission motion by Cr Jeff Johnson to reverse an earlier decision to sell the land to the State Government.

The final decision on the sale now rests with the Minister for Primary Industries, Katrina Hodgkinson.

The Lennox Head Residents' Association this week decided to write to the Minister, and State Member for Ballina, Don Page, objecting to the sale.

"It's the only council-owned block in the Lake Ainsworth precinct," president Fred Goodman said. "The sale is short-sighted because it overlooks the need for future amenities that we will need to cater for an increased population

"And the selling price is ludicrous.

"Once the block is sold, council will have no control over what happens there."

Cr Johnson said other councils were fighting against the takeover of public land by State Government-owned caravan parks.

The protest will take place from 11am at the Ross St site.
