THE lion-hearted can join in the annual Ballina Lions Club's 10th annual fun run and walk on Sunday, this year in aid of the local marine rescue unit.
The first event was held in 2006 to raise funds for the Lions' international campaign SightFirst II, which aimed to eliminate preventable blindness.
Ballina Lions was able to contribute more than $18,000 to that program in the first three years of the fun run.
An average of 500 people have taken part in the fun run and walk each year.
After the first three years, the event supported local charities like the Ballina Lighthouse and Lismore Surf Life Saving Club, the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter, Our House, Biala Special School, Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation and, last year, the Ballina and District Riding for the Disabled.
This year the Ballina Marine Rescue unit will be the beneficiary as it raises funds to fit out the proposed new tower.
The fun run will have 5km and 10km events, while the walkers will complete 5km.
The route, which starts at Missingham Park and takes in Missingham Bridge, North Wall and Compton Dr, has been accredited by Athletics Australia.
There are 12 categories in the running events for open, youth and over-50s male and female participants.
Entry ranges from $5 for the walk to $25 for the 10km run. Forms are available at the website ballinalions.com or at Athlete's Foot in Ballina Central. Registration on the day starts at 8am with events running from 9am.
The Lions club thanked the sponsors of the event.
