Sad farewell as rescued husky loses fight

DOGGIE heaven has claimed one of the two emaciated huskies rescued by Friends of the RSPCA after owners allegedly starved and mistreated them for years, keeping them on a Gladstone veranda.

Friends of the RSPCA President Judy Whicker said Lady's kidneys had failed completely, and after four days in hospital with vets working overtime to try and save her, the 16-year-old dog had been put down.

"The poor old girl, we had to say goodbye to her this morning," she said.

Since being rescued six weeks ago, Lady had been nursed back to a healthy weight by her loving carers and was happier, even puppy-like, Ms Whicker said.

But last week Lady stopped eating, and her vet at Gladstone Veterinary Hospital diagnosed renal failure.

"We're just devastated. She's an old girl, but she's had such a hard life. We were really hoping she would at least have a few more months with us."

Ms Whicker said the alleged starvation and mistreatment could have contributed to Lady's death.

Two men have been charged with animal cruelty and will face Gladstone Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Friends of the RSPCA will hold a rally against animal cruelty outside the courthouse on Yarroon St from 9am that day..
