Relay for Life kicks off
OVER the past 10 years Gladstone residents have raised more than $1.5 million for cancer research through Relay for Life.
This weekend more than 650 people will take part in the city's largest fundraiser and add a further $210,000 to that tally.
The ambitious target is $30,000 more than the total raised last year. So far this year, $102,000 has been raised by donations and fundraising efforts of the 67 teams participating.
Relay for Life co-ordinator Ashlee Hansen encouraged the community to get on board to help fund vital cancer research, education and patient support programs.
Fundraising for cancer research is close to the heart of the McGuire family, with four members diagnosed with different cancers.
Sixteen-year-old Annaliese decided to start up her own team, Little Steps of Hope, after going through her own battle with thyroid cancer last year.
The Chanel College student has previously joined in Relay for Life with her mother Jennifer who has participated every year since it started.
Annaliese's team, made up of her sister Eliza and friends from school, will contribute $2000 to Gladstone's fundraising tally.
"Our goal was $1000, and we doubled it," Miss McGuire said. "(People) were extremely generous."
