Reds pressure Brumbies but fail to push them from top spot

THE Queensland Reds huffed, and they puffed, but they could not blow the competition-leading Brumbies away in Brisbane on Saturday night.

The host laid siege to the visitor's line in the last quarter, but ran into a defensive brick wall, despite the Brumbies playing with 14 men - on two separate occasions - during the 19-19 draw.

It was the Brumbies second draw of the year after they finished 28-all against the competition newcomers, the Southern Kings, in round eight.

The result maintained the Brumbies' two-point lead over the Reds.

Although he would have loved nothing more than to leave Brisbane with a win, Brumbies coach Jake White said he was thrilled with the backs-to-the-wall defensive performance of his players after the Reds launched wave after wave of attack late in the match.

"You can't coach that last 20 minutes of defence. You can implements systems and build strength, but at the end of the day that came down to guts and determination," the former World Cup winning Springbok coach said.

The Brumbies host the Force this Saturday, while the Reds tackle the Blues, who had the bye last weekend, in Brisbane on Friday.
