WHEN Andrew Burnet heard about Second Hand Saturday sales he jumped at the opportunity to clean out the shed so others can make use of his "treasures".

Within minutes, the Dalwood resident was online and registered to participate in the biggest garage sale in Far North Coast history, on November 16.

"We just renovated our house and I have building materials left over and other bits and pieces we have collected over the years," he said.

"I thought we may as well have a clean up and get rid of it ... someone else may be able to get some use out of it because some of the stuff is in pretty good condition."

Second Hand Saturday will be held across the council areas of Lismore City, Ballina and Byron Shire, Richmond Valley, Kyogle and Clarence Valley.

More than 700 people signed up for Second Hand Saturday when it was held in 2011, and this year Tip Free Day will be held at Lismore the following day.

"This initiative is excellent at helping to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill," Mr Trustum said.

"Lismore is an absolute leader in waste management and I want to challenge our local residents to sign up, get involved and make this the biggest Second Hand Saturday ever."
