Recycle for sight at local market

MAY is the Lions' Recycle for Sight month, and you can donate used eyeglasses at the Ballina market on Sunday, May 20.

The market is held at Canal Rd from 7am to 1pm, on the third Sunday of each month, and is run by the East Ballina Lions Club.

The used eyeglasses are sent to the Lions Recycling Centre, where they are quality tested, repaired, cleaned and graded.

They are then forwarded to Lions clubs, church missions and humanitarian groups in developing countries to be given free of charge to people in need.

"A pair of glasses that most Australians take for granted can change a person's life," said Lion Dawn Sword.

"Poor eyesight, without access to eye care, may be easily corrected with used, but still usable, eyeglasses.

"The lack of glasses denies children and adults the opportunities for education, employment and a better quality of life."

The community is asked to leave used glasses at the Lions barbecue site at the market.

The Ballina Shire Concert Band also will perform at the market from 9am.

For more information on getting a stall site, phone Dawn on 6687 4328 or Wally on 6686 4546.
