Rare rainforest fruit tree discovered at East Ballina

MEMBERS of Ballina Coastcare have identified a single specimen of a rare rainforest tree at East Ballina.

The rusty plum (Niemeyera whitei) is listed as vulnerable under the New South Wales Threatened Species Act.

The specimen, which was found near Black Head, will produce edible, plum-sized fruit and members of Ballina Coastcare will be watching the tree closely to ensure it is protected.

The plant, which can reach a height of 20 metres, grows along the coastal strip between Coolangatta and just north of Taree, reaching west as far as the Richmond Range in the north and near Glen Innes further south.

The rusty plum is listed as a vulnerable species by the NSW Government.
