Birthday Week takes maiden plate in good omen for jockey

IT was only fitting that four-year-old mare Birthday Week took out the $15,000 tab.com.au maiden plate (1605m) at the Ballina Jockey Club TAB meeting yesterday.

Not only did it pay $21 but it also coincided with the birthdays of its rider, Casino jockey Justin Stanley, and one of its owners.

"There was definitely a bit of an omen out there today," Casino trainer Peter Stanley said.

"It was Justin's birthday yesterday and the owner's today.

"Being a week of birthdays it definitely makes sense

"It was a bloody great ride from Justin and a very fitting win."

Birthday Week finished in front of Clouds of Kalbar ($11) with Tonna Power ($2.80 favourite) back in third.

The horse has now had 17 career starts.

"She definitely should have won some races before this," Stanley said.

"Before I got her she had a lot of back trouble but she can gallop like hell.

"It was just a lot of bad luck more than anything.

"They took her to the University of Queensland when she was racing up there.

"In the end they locked her up in a small box for 12 days to try and sort everything out."

Stanley believes there is plenty of wins ahead for the four-year-old.

"We'll see how she pulls up from here," he said.

"We might look for a race around 1600-1700m.

"If she can get to 2000m, she'll be a really good horse."

In other races, Ballina trainer Stephen Randall had a win in the $15,000 Benchmark 60 Handicap (1005m) with eight-year-old gelding Cearnach ($11).

Racing returns to the Northern Rivers with a TAB meeting at the Casino Racing Club on April 10.

There is also a TAB meeting at Lismore on April 26.
