Quarry victim told mates he ‘felt weak’ - then he was gone

MOMENTS before Brendan Vickery's friends lost sight of him at the Island Quarry at Byron Bay on Sunday afternoon, he had told them he was feeling weak.

The body of the 20-year-old Victorian man was found by police divers from Sydney about 5pm on Monday.

Emergency services personnel had been searching for the man since he was reported missing early Sunday afternoon.

Tweed Byron police Inspector Jim Cain said the man, who has yet to be formally identified, had been jumping off the quarry cliff into the swimming hole with friends.

He said after the jump, the 20-year-old told his friends he was feeling too weak to swim to the clearing and would try to make his way around the edges of the quarry by clinging to the rocky wall.

"The other friends swam across the water and were sitting on the bank for a while before they realised he hadn't surfaced," Inspector Cain said.

"The last they saw of him, he was making his way along the rocks."

Between 2011 and 2012, three people were nearly paralysed and one person almost drowned after jumping from the quarry cliff face.

Island Quarry Reserve Trust president Shane Rennie said he was sad and upset to hear what had happened.

"People aren't allowed to swim there; we don't condone it at all, and jumping especially," Mr Rennie said.

"We wish the backpacker businesses would stop promoting the quarry as somewhere to go swimming."
