THE Queensland Firebirds ended a two-game losing streak in emphatic fashion with a record-breaking 72-47 win against the West Coast Fever in Perth yesterday.
The Queenslanders recorded their highest score against the Fever in the trans-Tasman Championship, eclipsing the previous best of 65 on the way to taking second spot on the table.
Romelda Aiken grabbed 45 goals from 57 shots, while Natalie Medhurst scored 27 goals from 33 attempts as the Firebirds beat the Fever for the 11th time in the 12 meetings between the sides.
The Firebirds scored 11 consecutive goals to take a 19-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, a lead they never surrendered.
Queensland captain Laura Gietz said her players knew they had to deliver.
"We did plenty of soul-searching after the two losses - we knew we needed to re-group and get it all together in this one," she said.
Meanwhile the eighth-placed NSW Swifts caused the upset of the year after beating the Vixens 48-39 in Melbourne.
